Blois Blois Blois

The Loire is home to nearly 90 individual chateaus, each with a unique contribution to French history and beautiful in its own right. Visiting any one of them on a slow, crisp Spring day during low season is a treat.

The Royal Chateau de Blois appears on many “must see” lists. Easily found in Centerville in Blois, it is just a quick walk from shops and cafes. Perched high above street level, it has a panoramic view of the city.

It was first built in 854 and as the former residence for Counts of Blois and a few French Kings, the rooms and grounds have been well maintained. It is famous for many reasons. Some visitors are drawn to see where Joan of Arc received blessings in 1429 from the Archbishop of Reims before she led an army to drive out the British from Orleans. Others are excited to see Catherine de' Medici‘s (supposed) cabinet of poisons.

And the gorgeous spiral staircase, of course!
